# Surya Kund at Yamunotri — The Boiling Hot Spring & Its Miracle
Few experiences in the Char Dham Yatra are as immediately extraordinary as standing beside the Surya Kund at Yamunotri. Steam rises in great clouds from a pool of water that boils at near-scalding temperatures — 88°C to 94°C — in the middle of a cold Himalayan valley at over 3,000 metres altitude. The visual and sensory contrast is startling. And the tradition associated with it is unlike anything else in Hindu pilgrimage.
What is Surya Kund?
Surya Kund (Sun Pool) is a natural hydrothermal pool at the Yamunotri temple complex. The spring is fed by geothermal activity deep beneath the Himalayan rock — the same tectonic forces that formed these mountains heat the underground water to boiling point before it emerges at the surface. The name connects to Surya Dev — Yamuna's father — who is believed to continuously heat the water with his solar energy.
Temperature of the Water
The Surya Kund maintains a near-constant temperature of 88°C to 94°C regardless of season — even in winter when the surrounding temperatures drop well below zero, the spring steams and boils. This thermal stability is what makes it so remarkable from both a geological and spiritual perspective.
Cooking Rice in the Hot Spring — The Sacred Tradition
The most distinctive tradition at Yamunotri is the custom of cooking rice in the Surya Kund. Pilgrims bring raw rice in small cloth packets and lower them into the spring using rope or string. The boiling water cooks the rice perfectly in approximately 15–30 minutes. This cooked rice is then:
1. Offered to Goddess Yamuna at the main temple as prasad
2. Taken home as a sacred offering to share with family members who could not make the journey
The tradition is deeply meaningful — rice cooked by the divine heat of the sun god's pool, offered to his daughter, carried home as divine grace. It is entirely unique to Yamunotri.
Gauri Kund — For Bathing
Since Surya Kund is far too hot for bathing, an adjacent pool — Gauri Kund — provides a bathing option. The water here is warm but not scalding (approximately 45–55°C), and pilgrims take their ritual purification dip here before entering the temple.
The Science Behind It
The Yamunotri hot springs result from hydrothermal convection — rainwater and snowmelt seep deep into the rock through fissures, gets heated by geothermal energy, and rises back to the surface. The Himalayan region sits on active tectonic zones, making hydrothermal activity relatively common in high-altitude valleys (similar springs exist at Gaurikund near Kedarnath, Tapt Kund at Badrinath, and several other locations).
The Spiritual and Mythological Story
In Puranic mythology, the Sun God's heat purifies all things.
